How to Upholster Living Room Chairs (October 24, 2009)Is an ugly living room chair ruining your decor? Instead of throwing it out try reupholstering it! With these easy steps you'll be able to reupholster any living room or dining room chair in minimal time. Step 1 Using a razor blade, carefully cut along the seams of the existing fabric. Do not discard these pieces! On the back of each piece you cut away write an identifying marker so you can easily recall where each piece came from. Step 2 Strip away all old fabric Once all the fabric is stripped away and properly labeled, lay the removed pieces on top of your new fabric in a wide open space. Make a chalk outline of your throw away piece on your new fabric and, in chalk, label your new pieces on the back side. Remove the old piece and then make a new chalk outline that is two inches wider than your previous outline. This area will be used for sewing and stapling. Cut around your exterior chalk outlines. Once you have cut all pieces, take two adjoining pieces and, tucking the two inches under, sew the fabric together so that the original interior chalk outline is where your seam lies. The two inches of fabric are still important, do not cut away the excess. Step 3 Now, facing your chair, remove all batting and replace with new materials. Use fabric glue to secure the batting, and staple it in place so that it does not shift or move when you run your palm firmly against it. Slip your newly created cover over the chair in pieces. Where you cannot sew together, use the extra two inches of fabric and staple the flaps under the chair, behind the back and under the arm rests. Use your 2x4 to firmly iron out any wrinkles in your fabric before stapling so that the final appearance is smooth. Glue all stray pieces in place via hidden areas. Step 4 Finally, reupholster your top cushion by making a copy slip cover of the original chair.
