Many homeowners want beautiful, functional spaces in their homes. Designing your dining room can be a challenge depending on its formality, the number of guests you expect to entertain, and the type of dining that will take place.

Designing Your Dining Room: Basic Considerations

Before picking out wall colors and ordering a new table and chairs, it is important to consider the basics of interior design

as they apply to a dining room. The basic room you have to work with as well as how you plan to use it are crucial factors when designing your dining room.

Size

The size of the room helps dictate the colors and furnishings that are most suitable. A very small dining room, for example, would feel cluttered and overcrowded when paired with dark, heavy furniture, dark walls, and heavy drapes. Large rooms, on the other hand, will feel empty if the table is tiny and there are no other furnishings, particularly if the window is bright and airy and the walls are light-colored. If the room is very small, consider adding an additional window or wall cutout to enhance the space – windows that open into the kitchen are especially valuable and efficient. To shrink a large room to a more manageable size, add tall plants, rich drapes, or additional pieces of furniture (a china cabinet for example).

Formality

A formal dining room meant for use only on special occasions needs different design consideration than an informal eatery. While candid family pictures may be appropriate for a casual setting, a formal portrait is a better accent in a formal room. Furthermore, a crystal chandelier is out of place in an informal room, while generic floor lamps are not suitable for a fine dining room. Choosing the formality of the room will help determine these basic interior design choices.

Frequency

Designing your dining room can be an expensive project, and before you choose to create an opulent formal setting, consider how frequently you will use it. If the dining room is pressed into service regularly for Sunday dinners, dinner parties, and holiday gatherings, it may be well worth it to seek professional advice, whereas if it is to be a casual or less frequently used room, your personal preferences may be all the design consultation you need.

Accessibility

One often overlooked consideration when designing dining rooms is accessibility. Naturally, there should be easy access to the kitchen, and if you plan on extensive entertaining it should be accessible to other gathering areas as well ( living room, home theater, etc.). Furthermore, the dining room should be near a bathroom for convenience.

Not only does a dining room need to be accessible to other parts of the house, but it should be roomy enough that guests do not need to vacate their chairs to let other people pass or to retrieve dishes from a cabinet.

Furniture

The first consideration for dining room furniture should be the number of necessary chairs. Nothing will destroy a carefully designed dining room more quickly than importing folding chairs when extra seats are needed. Table size is also a factor: be sure to leave at least 24 inches of clearance around the perimeter of the room (while the chairs are in place around the table) to allow guests to move about freely.Additional furniture in a dining room is a matter of personal preference. When choosing lighting fixtures, take into account the presence of natural light: if you plan on hosting dinner parties, avoid western-facing windows that would focus the setting sun into your guests’ eyes.

You have a gorgeous dining room table—as long as no one sits near it. Then it wobbles, tips and appears as if it’s about to fall over at any moment. Rather than relegating the table to the trash heap, you can make a dining room table more stable with a little effort and items you probably have around the house. A few simple steps will put everyone who sits at it in less danger of being crushed by it.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Place it on a flat, level surface. One of the easiest ways to level out furniture is to make sure it’s on a level surface. As flat as your floor may appear, it may have downward dips or weak spots. Move the table slightly forward, back and side to side to see if a simple repositioning takes care of your problem.

If you’ve checked out the prices in furniture stores, you’re well aware of the high cost of purchasing new furniture. A dining room table can cost upwards of $2,000, and that’s not necessarily the top of the line. There are alternatives, however, that can improve the appearance of your existing dining room table without costing a fortune. The easiest and least expensive is painting. The result may just surprise you.

How to Paint a Dining Room Table

1. Step 1

   Disassemble the dining room table. Lay the legs and extra leaves on a tarp. Lean the table top against a wall covered in plastic sheeting. Lightly sand all pieces of the dining room table using fine sandpaper. Brush away dust using a clean, unused paint brush. If there are any dings or dents in the table, apply wood filler to each area.

2. Step 2

   Apply a coat of primer to all pieces of the dining room table. In most cases, one coat of primer will do. Allow all pieces to dry completely before applying a top coat of color.
   Apply the first coat of paint in the color you have chosen. Allow a few hours of drying time before applying a second coat.
   Apply a third coat of paint if needed for additional color coverage. Allow at least 24 hours of drying time once all coats of paint have been applied.

3. Step 3

   Reassemble the dining room table, taking extra care not to nick any of the newly painted pieces. Once the table is put back together, check all parts for nicks, chips or spots that may have been missed during the painting process. Touch up the paint as necessary. If any touch-up is required on the table top, allow yet another 24 hours of drying time.

4. Step 4

   Run your hand along all parts of the reassembled dining room table to ensure that no tacky areas remain. If completely dry, apply a coat of clear top coat sealer to all parts of the dining room table. Allow to dry for a few hours. Apply a second coat to the table top only. This will allow for wear and tear on the table through everyday use with dishes and cutlery, preserving the color and finish of the paint. Some people like to ensure extra durability by applying a third coat of clear coat to the table top only. Once all coats of clear top coat have been applied, allow 24 hours of drying time.

5. Step 5

   Examine the entire table–especially the top–for tacky paint. If the finish feels smooth and dry, it is safe to go about using the dining room table. Be sure to use hot pads when setting hot pots or pans on the table, as the top coat can become tacky if excessively heated the first few weeks after being treated.
   After a few weeks of curing time, treat the table as you would any other dining room table. Wash and dry it using soap and water, or polish it with furniture polish.
