How to Make a Dining Room Table More Stable

You have a gorgeous dining room table—as long as no one sits near it. Then it wobbles, tips and appears as if it’s about to fall over at any moment. Rather than relegating the table to the trash heap, you can make a dining room table more stable with a little effort and items you probably have around the house. A few simple steps will put everyone who sits at it in less danger of being crushed by it.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Place it on a flat, level surface. One of the easiest ways to level out furniture is to make sure it’s on a level surface. As flat as your floor may appear, it may have downward dips or weak spots. Move the table slightly forward, back and side to side to see if a simple repositioning takes care of your problem.

Step 2

Even out the legs. If the dining room table is still wobbly, check to ensure all the legs are an even length. One may be missing a knob, caster or other piece that makes it shorter than the rest. Use a matchbook, folded carboard, small pieces of wood or other objects to make sure the legs are of equal length. You can wrap decorative scarves or drapery fringe around the bottom of the legs if you need to hide the items you used to stabilize the table.

Step 3

Add additional leg support. If your table is still rickety, create some additional leg support by making braces for the legs. You can use something as simple as garden stakes as long as you make sure the ends are wide and flat enough to sit securely on the floor. Wire, nail or glue the leg braces into place. Paint it the same color or finish as the table so it doesn’t look stupid.

Step 4

Cover the top with a heavy, flat object. A large mirror, heavy piece of glass or solid chunk of wood will add stability to a tabletop that has seen better days. You can place paraphernalia under the glass to make it a collage table, paint the wood a similar or contrasting color with a funky design or just throw a tablecloth over the whole thing and call it a day.

Step 5

Put pillars of support underneath the table. For tables that just won’t get stable with the simpler steps, you can always pile things underneath. If yours is a table with a center pillar, use decorative shelving units, end tables or even spray painted milk crates around the edges, the same height or a little higher than the pillar. Use wood blocks to add smaller height additions. If your table has legs around the perimeter, you can add these items in the middle of the table as a central pillar. Pack the crates and such with knickknacks, books or other items so it looks like you wanted your table to be this way.

How to Get a Contemporary Dining Room

A contemporary dining room can really make your house feel modern. This style appeals to a lot of home buyers, so it is great if you are selling your house. It makes the room feel “decorated” without being fussy. This also means that you have less things to buy if you are starting from scratch. Here is how to get a contemporary dining room no matter your budget.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Understand what the word contemporary means. Contemporary is often confused with modern style. Modern furniture came from a specific time period. Contemporary literally means “the present time.” Contemporary style is always changing. Whatever is contemporary now, won’t be contemporary in a decade. This means that you will be on the cutting edge of design. It also means that your furniture may seem dated in a few years. Spend the appropriate amount of money. You can choose neutral furniture pieces that will transition into the next style. If you are set on having a really unusual dining room set, cut your budget in half so you can replace it when it becomes outdated.

Step 2

Create an illusion of space. This can be done by taking out any unnecessary pieces of furniture. Decide how important it is for you to have a china cabinet. If you don’t really use it, this can free up a ton of space. Clean the windows so more light enters the room. Keep clutter to a minimum. Only use what is absolutely necessary. Contemporary style tends to stay away from chair pads & table clothes. The beauty is in the lines of the furniture. Repeat shapes. A contemporary dining room gives off a feeling instead of an overall theme. You can create continuity in your room with shapes. Decorate with white. White is one of the most used colors in contemporary dining rooms. You might think that you already have a white dining room, but it may be looking a little dingy. This can make the room feel unkempt. The white should be intentional instead of the default. However, a coat of bright white paint will really bring in that contemporary feeling.

Step 5

Use elements of nature in unexpected ways. This can be as simple as having a bamboo floor in your contemporary dining room. Modern design stays away from many natural elements, but a few touches in contemporary design can soften the feel. You can even look for chargers with a sleek wood grain on them, or bring in a sisal area rug.

Step 6

Play around with height. Many contemporary dining rooms are found in newer homes. These often have high ceilings. One of the biggest trends in dining right now is a counter height table. These work especially well in breakfast nooks. Just make sure that you are comfortable sitting at this new height for a good length of time.

Step 7

If you accentuate the height of the room it can make the entire space seem larger. You can even try making a large centerpiece made out of curly twigs or willows. Top notch wedding designers often use these at celebrity weddings. Just make sure that the piece is skinny enough that your guests can still see each other around the centerpiece or through the branches.

How to Buy a Dining Room Table Set

If you’re tired of sitting around a table in the corner of the kitchen, or eating on a stool at a bar, perhaps it’s time to buy a dining room table set. There are a few things to consider before buying the first set you see and like. Take a little time before purchasing a dining room set, since it could be a purchase that will last for years. Read on to learn more.

Step 1

Think about how you plan to utilize your new dining room set. Decide if you need it for everyday use or just for entertaining and special occasions.

Step 2

Decide how your dining table will fit into your life. If you will use your table for dinner parties, then decide how many people need to be seated and served. Also, if many children will be dining at your table, then consider buying a table made of very sturdy material.

Step 3

Measure your space. Furniture in the stores looks a lot smaller than when you get it home and sometimes just eyeballing a space can get you into a lot of trouble. When measuring, leave at least three feet from the edge of the table to the wall, for each chair to be pulled out.

Step 4

Look at the surrounding décor to decide what kind of table will fit in without buying all new furniture. How to Decorate a Dining Room With Candles

The dining room is a place in any home to come together. It is a place to talk about our days and about life in general over a good meal. A nicely decorated dining room makes any meal a memorable occasion. Here are some tips for decorating a dining room with candles.

Step 1

Complement your dishes. If the dishes you use on a daily basis are patterned, use candles and candleholders the same color as a prominent hue featured in your china pattern. If your dishes are a solid color, choose candles that are similar or, if your dishes are solid black or white, accent them with bold, brightly colored candles that add life to your dinner table.

Step 2

Vary placement. While candles and other decorations can make a dining room table elegant and festive, too many decorations result in just a cluttered table. If your dining room table is small or you are planning a large meal, place candles somewhere in the dining room other than on the table. Use a side table or windowsills or install a set of decorative sconces on your dining room wall.

Step 3

Use unscented candles. Scented candles make any other room in your home smell fresh and inviting, but in a dining room already full of the great aromas that accompany good home cooking, scented candles are out of place. Instead, focus on color and light when choosing candles for your dining room.

How to Decorate Dining Room Tables

Your dining room table can serve many different functions depending on your lifestyle. It may be used solely for special occasions and holidays, for adult company, or it may be a place where your family eats on a daily basis. Regardless of how often and who uses your dining room, you have a variety of options when it comes to decorating your dining room table. With a little creativity, you will be able to delight your guests or family members with your beautifully decorated table.

Step 1
Use fabrics on your table. You can create a beautifully decorated dining room table by simply adding a table cloth. Choose a table cloth that coordinates with the décor of your room whether it be white lace to match your curtains or black cloth to match your seat cushions. Using a variety of different table cloths will enable you to change the look of your table as often as you like. You may also want to consider using a table runner either on top of or without your table cloth to add another splash of color or a touch of luxury. Linen napkins fitted into simple or unique rings will also add to your table décor. Finally, consider place mats to anchor your plates and add another element of design.
Step 2

Use your table ware as decorative anchor. Why keep your beautiful china hidden in the cabinet when you can display it for all the world to see? Pull out your dinner plates, salad bowls, saucers and dishes. Whether your dinner plates are formal or funky, leaving them set on your table will provide a nice look and allow for less prep time when you plan to use the table.
Step 3

Create ambiance by decorating your dining room table with candles. There are a variety of candles you can use for your décor. Use tall candle sticks with tall skinny candles in the center of your table and at the heads. Or choose thick candles in fat holders of different sizes. Use votives in patterns of three at various places on your table or simply place them randomly. Tea lights in glass holders scattered around the table will create a nice look as well. Finally, consider glass bowls filled with water and floating candles for a unique design. Turn the lights down and light the candles in the evening for a touch of elegance.

Change the look of your dining room table through the use of centerpieces. The sky is the limit as far as these table anchors are concerned. How to Set a Dining Room Table

The guests are on their way, you’ve prepared the food, music is playing in the background, and you’re all dressed up in your party clothes. All that’s left is to set the dining table for your shindig. Once you’ve ruled out serving buffet style, you just need to know where to place your dishes and flatware. Don’t panic, because setting a dining table is not that difficult once you know how many people are coming.

Step 1

Determine the menu and number of guests. Gather the appropriate dishes and flatware and place them near the dining table.

Step 2

Spread the tablecloth so that no wrinkles are present. Iron the tablecloth, if needed. Place mats are suitable in place of a tablecloth.

Step 3

Set your centerpiece in the center of the table. Artfully arranged fresh flowers are always a lovely choice. Candles or a holiday-themed decoration are also acceptable.

Step 4

Place the dinner plates one inch from the edge of the table in front of each chair.

Step 5

Lay the fork on the left side of the plate. The knife goes on the right-hand side, with the sharp side facing the plate. The spoon goes right next to the knife. Line up all of these utensils to be even with the plate, 1 inch from the table edge.

Step 6

Add any additional utensils, based on the menu. Spoons will go next to spoons and forks next to forks. Common additions include a salad fork and a soup spoon. The utensils should be placed in the order they will be used, with the first course utensils farthest from the plate.

Step 7

Put the glass directly above the knife and spoon. A wineglass can be placed next to the water glass, if wine will be served.

Step 8

Lay a napkin in the center of the dinner plate. A napkin ring will add a nice flair to the entire table setting.
