Dining Room Wall Ideas

posted by Dining Tables & Chairs

A dining room should be conducive to eating, entertaining and family time. Whether your home is decorated in French country or contemporary design, a well-designed dining room can stimulate appetites as well as conversation. In addition to furniture and centerpieces, one way to create the dining room of your dreams is by decorating the walls. This can be done with items such as paint and wall sconces.

  • Paint

    • One of the easiest and most budget-friendly ways to decorate your dining room walls is with paint. Invigorate the space by painting the dining room a dramatic red. Restaurants often are decorated in red, which is said to encourage socializing as well as eating. Keep in mind that red will make the dining room appear smaller and can be bit overpowering. An alternative to an all-red dining room is painting just one accent wall a deep red, while painting the other walls in a neutral color such as off-white or a soft yellow. Either one is warm and works well with red.

    Mural

    • A wall mural, done on one large wall, creates an instant focal point for a dining room. Start by painting the wall in a neutral color, such as peach. Paint an intricate Asian mural on the wall, such as a large and stunning cherry blossom tree. Add more painted images such as mountains and Buddhist temples.

    Mirror

    • Create an elegant display on a dining room wall. Hang a large, unframed mirror in the center of a large wall. Use your painted accent wall, if you have one. On each side of the mirror, hang wall sconces, complete with candles. Make sure each sconce is the same distance from the mirror.

Contemporary Dining Room Ideas

posted by Dining Tables & Chairs
Contemporary dining rooms require minimal furniture and accessories and the use of durable materials. This makes the space great for families because the room will be easy to clean and affordable to decorate. You might even be able to create a contemporary dining space with your existing pieces.

Contemporary Colors

  • Neutral colors often appear in contemporary design. A basic color palette allows you to keep up with the ever changing trends. Use inexpensive artwork and accessories so you are always on the edge of design. Paint the walls in a bright white, medium taupe or soft gray. If you want a more daring dining room, consider a bold chocolate brown or black. Use accessories such as bright orange plates or red curtains to bring in appetizing colors. Draw the accent color from artwork or use green accents for a nature-inspired room.

Materials and Focal Points

  • Contemporary design combines natural and manmade materials. Bring nature into the dining room with a durable laminate, bamboo or wood floor that can be easily cleaned. Leave wood trim unpainted to show off its natural beauty. Place a few plants around the dining room for a cozy touch.

The focus of a dining room space can be the architecture of your home or back yard. Accomplish this by keeping the room neutral so the eye drifts outside. Take off the window coverings to let more light in and lend a casual air to the contemporary dining room. If you want window treatments, try natural bamboo or grass shades. Add a silk panel on either side of the window. The shades will give you privacy and the curtains won’t even need to close.

Furniture

  • Contemporary dining room furniture focuses on straight lines. Look for chairs that include a fabric element such as micro-suede parsons’ chairs. Stainless steel and frosted glass make for a modern dining room table. Any wood tones should be dark, such as espresso, with minimal grain showing. Showcase the beauty of your dining room set by forgoing tablecloths or chair pads.

Accessories

  • Keep accessories to a minimum in a contemporary dining room for a sleek look. Make a decorating statement with the scale of the pieces you do use. Instead of a flower arrangement, place tall curly willows in a pottery vase in the corner of the room. Replace a traditional chandelier with an oversized drum shade.

Look for floor to ceiling artwork that can serve as the focal point of the space. You can create your own custom artwork by stretching a contemporary fabric over a frame and stapling it. Contemporary patterns are bold and geometric. Use the fabric in one area of the room so it really stands out.

Living Room-Dining Room Combo Decorating Ideas

posted by Dining Tables & Chairs

A combined living room and dining room, often known as a great room, offers the homeowner a large space for entertaining and casual living, and is common in contemporary architecture. This large space can cause decorating headaches, however, as one large room must fill many roles and functions. Make a plan for functional, attractive decor based on how you use the rooms most often.

Zones

  • If the great room is overwhelming, consider breaking it down into smaller zones defined by furniture placement. For example, the dining area might have a table and chairs, buffet, china cabinet, sideboard or other furniture; arrange the pieces to create a more intimate dining space and counteract the size of the great room. Create a conversation grouping in the living area with sofas, chairs and accent tables, and set it off with an area rug. If there are children in the home, consider an activity or toy corner as another zone in the room.

Color

  • The size of a great room can result in a cold, overwhelming space. Use color to create a more welcoming area,. Large spaces can tolerate darker shades than smaller spaces can, so this is an opportunity to use rich colors on the walls and in upholstery and window fabrics. Warm, bold shades such as olive, burgundy, chocolate, deep red and gold visually bring in the walls and warm a large room. If the ceiling is vaulted, painting it a muted variation of the wall color instead of white can help make the room’s proportions appear more even.

Flooring

  • The flooring in a great room needs to accommodate the various uses of the room. The floor must withstand high traffic, food and moisture while maintaining comfort and appearance. Common flooring choices for great rooms include hardwood, laminate, tile and carpet. Area and throw rugs can help define spaces within the great room, while runners add protection for high-traffic areas. Consider varying the flooring within the great room to further define the zones, such as using tile in the dining room and hardwood or carpet in the living area.

Lighting

  • Standard overhead lighting is often inadequate for a great room, particularly if it has a vaulted ceiling. Instead, use chandeliers and pendant lights to bring the lighting closer to living areas. Supplement with task lighting, such as a pendant over the dining table and floor lamps or table lamps near the sofa. Recessed and track lighting can add ambiance to and accent architectural features of the room.

Designing your Dining Room

posted by Dining Tables & Chairs

Designing your Dining Room

Many homeowners want beautiful, functional spaces in their homes. Designing your dining room can be a challenge depending on its formality, the number of guests you expect to entertain, and the type of dining that will take place.

Designing Your Dining Room: Basic Considerations

Before picking out wall colors and ordering a new table and chairs, it is important to consider the basics of interior design

as they apply to a dining room. The basic room you have to work with as well as how you plan to use it are crucial factors when designing your dining room.

Size

The size of the room helps dictate the colors and furnishings that are most suitable. A very small dining room, for example, would feel cluttered and overcrowded when paired with dark, heavy furniture, dark walls, and heavy drapes. Large rooms, on the other hand, will feel empty if the table is tiny and there are no other furnishings, particularly if the window is bright and airy and the walls are light-colored. If the room is very small, consider adding an additional window or wall cutout to enhance the space – windows that open into the kitchen are especially valuable and efficient. To shrink a large room to a more manageable size, add tall plants, rich drapes, or additional pieces of furniture (a china cabinet for example).

Formality

A formal dining room meant for use only on special occasions needs different design consideration than an informal eatery. While candid family pictures may be appropriate for a casual setting, a formal portrait is a better accent in a formal room. Furthermore, a crystal chandelier is out of place in an informal room, while generic floor lamps are not suitable for a fine dining room. Choosing the formality of the room will help determine these basic interior design choices.

Frequency

Designing your dining room can be an expensive project, and before you choose to create an opulent formal setting, consider how frequently you will use it. If the dining room is pressed into service regularly for Sunday dinners, dinner parties, and holiday gatherings, it may be well worth it to seek professional advice, whereas if it is to be a casual or less frequently used room, your personal preferences may be all the design consultation you need.

Accessibility

One often overlooked consideration when designing dining rooms is accessibility. Naturally, there should be easy access to the kitchen, and if you plan on extensive entertaining it should be accessible to other gathering areas as well ( living room, home theater, etc.). Furthermore, the dining room should be near a bathroom for convenience.

Not only does a dining room need to be accessible to other parts of the house, but it should be roomy enough that guests do not need to vacate their chairs to let other people pass or to retrieve dishes from a cabinet.

Furniture

The first consideration for dining room furniture should be the number of necessary chairs. Nothing will destroy a carefully designed dining room more quickly than importing folding chairs when extra seats are needed. Table size is also a factor: be sure to leave at least 24 inches of clearance around the perimeter of the room (while the chairs are in place around the table) to allow guests to move about freely.Additional furniture in a dining room is a matter of personal preference. Many people choose to incorporate china cabinets into the décor to highlight fine china and crystal, and a wine rack would certainly not be out of place. When adding these extra pieces, however, always consider the available space and whether they will make the room uncomfortably crowded.

Lighting

Lighting is a crucial consideration when designing your dining room. Guests should have adequate light to appreciate the food without squinting, but the light should not be so harsh as to glare off a white tablecloth or dishes. Chandeliers are common fixtures in dining rooms, and they can be purchased in a variety of designs and styles to match any level of formality. When choosing lighting fixtures, take into account the presence of natural light: if you plan on hosting dinner parties, avoid western-facing windows that would focus the setting sun into your guests’ eyes.

Amazing kitchen dining room remodeling ideas

Dining room remodeling can be an enjoyable way to update your dining room and change the overall atmosphere. Flooring has the potential to make your room look bigger or smaller, more sophisticated, or more casual. A fresh coat of paint can make any washed over room look fresh and new again. Kitchen remodeling or renovating is quite a tough work, but proper planning and zeal to get your dream kitchen, compel you to renovate your kitchen. The materials are simple but rich: maple cabinet faces, aluminum pulls, stainless steel appliances, black granite countertops, and a glass tile backsplash. At the rear wall the countertop drops and changes to a maple desk top, then drops again to become a window seat in the same finish.

Dream of a glamorous dining rooms

Reinvent forlorn dining rooms with suitable furnishings, paint, and fabric. The right table — set on a bright area rug or centered on a window — can be your anchor. A round table, the favorite for conversation, softens a boxy room; a small square table does well in tight quarters; long farmhouse-type tables work best in rectangular rooms. And for ambience find a stunning electric or candle-holding chandelier.

Warm colors stimulate conversation. Paint walls a soft red, or cover them with a richly textured or patterned wallcovering. Soft contemporary hues like hydrangea-purple and pistachio-green teamed with crisp white moldings will imbue the room with a Monet-garden air. Slipcover dining chairs, or add simple seat cushions in a contrasting color or a pleasing floral pattern.

Whether you dream of a glamorous, modern, traditional, or romantic look for your dining room, this article has the decorating tips to help you achieve your goal. On the next page, learn how to make your dining room gleam with glamor.

    Do’s and Don’ts for a dining room

    Do’s and Don’ts for a dining room

    Do’s and Don’ts for a dining room

The dining room is one of my favorite places to be with family & friends. Those walls have embraced lots of love, laughter, and even tears over the years. You might argue that most dining rooms are only used on holidays and special occasions, but it’s not a room I would give up.

Here are some Do’s and Don’ts for a great room:

    * Do consider a round dining table. If you have a room that is more square; round can be great for conversations. The new styles have some creative solutions to expand for larger parties.
    * Do place an area rug under the table, whether you have hardwood or carpet, it can really bring a room together. Make sure it’s big enough so that chairs are fully on the rug when seated and when the table is fully extended.
    * Don’t get a a light fixture that is too small or large for the scale of the table and room. A rule of thumb is to choose a chandelier with a diameter that is 12″ less than the width of the table. Hang it approximately 30-34″ from the top of the table. If your ceilings are higher, add 3″ for each foot over 8′. Personally, I like to go lower than higher. Just make sure you can clearly see your guests across the table and that you don’t see any exposed bulbs when standing if it is a chandelier with indirect lighting.
    * Don’t forget the ceiling. Add interest with color, faux painting or a fabulous medallion above the chandelier.
    * Don’t hang pictures too high. The majority of time spent in this room is while seated, so make sure that when sitting, the art is hung at eye level.
    * Don’t be afraid to mix and match chairs, fabric, and even China; it can give an interesting flair to the room. Especially, if there is a story behind the china.

Finally, embrace your new Dining Room. Why is it only used for dinner parties and holiday get togethers? Break away from habit and occasionally share a candle lit dinner with that special someone or make the kids feel really special with dinner and candles just “because”. Have any other tips? We’d love to hear from you!

    Dining Room Decorating Ideas

There are those who would trade anything to have a separate dining room, others pooh-pooh the one they have as a wasted bit of space and shut the door.

The first group has nothing to envy since there are myriad ways to forge comfortable, part-time dining areas in other rooms. The naysayers can take heart, too. With some adjustments, their forlorn rooms can be made as satisfying as mom’s home cooking.

Any room with a few square feet to spare such as family rooms and dens — particularly those lined with books or French doors — make spectacular mealtime settings. Position a table to one side of the room, figuring about 8 square feet for a table for 4, plus around 36 inches for the chair pull-out. Or hire a carpenter to build a stationary bench flush against the wall. Place a skinny pine table in front and ladder-back chairs opposite.

Tuck a drop-leaf table that’s ready to do double duty in a spacious entry hall. One moment it’s a hall table, the next it seats special guests. The round table beside the family room sofa? A romantic oasis. Cover the table with a colored cloth, pull up some seats, and light the fire.

Diverse chair styles add drama: wing chairs, love seats, and even ottomans (as long as they roll). Flexible dining should be as easy as pie. Collect benches that slide or feather-light wicker chairs to nestle up to a salvaged garden table.
